The Life of Jesus, Chapter 20 summary

Chapter 20 of 30 · 11 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 20, Jesus faces growing unbelief and clashes with the Pharisees over religious observance, humility, and conscience, while Antipas leaves him largely undisturbed. The conflict becomes a deadly struggle, and Jesus turns toward Judea because he sees that remaining in Galilee limits his influence.

What happens

  1. Jesus refuses to entertain Antipas with miracles and sees through a warning intended to drive him from the territory.
  2. Rejection in Nazareth and other Galilean towns draws increasingly bitter rebukes from Jesus.
  3. The narrator contrasts Jesus’ inward religion and welcome for outcasts with Pharisaic certainty, status, and outward observance.
  4. Jesus challenges traditional washings and tells a parable in which a humble tax collector receives justification rather than a self-satisfied Pharisee.
  5. Pharisees seek political support against Jesus, but opportunities for escape and weak government frustrate their attempts in Galilee.
  6. Jesus feels drawn toward Judea and seeks another effort to win Jerusalem.
