Part 1 of 2 · 46 min to read the part

In Found Among the Papers of the Late Diedrich Knickerbocker, Ichabod Crane teaches in a secluded valley, absorbs its ghost stories, and courts Katrina Van Tassel with her family’s wealth in mind. His pursuit provokes Brom Van Brunt’s practical jokes, while an invitation to a gathering at her father’s house prompts him to dismiss school early.

What happens

  1. The narrator describes Sleepy Hollow’s stillness, its inhabitants’ supernatural beliefs, and the legend of a headless rider seeking his missing head.
  2. Ichabod Crane supports himself through teaching, singing lessons, and lodging with pupils’ families, while ghost stories feed his nighttime fears.
  3. Katrina Van Tassel attracts Ichabod, and her father’s abundant farm inspires dreams of marriage, wealth, and migration.
  4. Ichabod courts Katrina quietly despite the intimidating presence of Brom Van Brunt, whose standing with her declines.
  5. Unable to provoke Ichabod into fighting, Brom and his companions disrupt his teaching and mock his singing.
  6. A messenger invites Ichabod to an evening gathering at Van Tassel’s, and the excited teacher releases his pupils an hour early.
