  1. Key idea 1

    Ordinary moments reveal hidden lives

At Yalta, a married man watches a young woman walking beside the sea with a small white dog. He imagines a brief affair, but the encounter becomes serious love. An ordinary holiday moment opens onto feelings he did not expect.

Chekhov brings the same attention to people in a cotton factory, a Petersburg flat and a provincial ballroom. Rather than telling us what to think, he lets their actions expose what they cannot see about themselves. The distance between appearances and inner life matters throughout these stories.

Key point 1 of 10

A holiday affair that will not end

At Yalta, Dmitri Gurov, a Moscow banker with a wife and three children, notices a young woman with a white Pomeranian. The town calls her the lady with the dog. He is afraid of his wife and has cheated on her for years. He begins a light conversation, and her name is Anna Sergeyevna. Within a week they are lovers.

Anna calls it a disaster and says she despises herself. Then a letter comes from her husband, and she leaves, telling Gurov they will never meet again.

Back in Moscow, Gurov expects the memory to fade. Instead it sharpens, and the people around him sound shallow. In December he travels to her town and stares for hours at a gray fence studded with nails. He finds her at the theatre, and she is terrified and glad at once. She begins to visit him in Moscow, and he sees that he lives two lives, one false and public, the other secret and true. A holiday fling can show a man how empty his daily life has been.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
