Chapter 13 of 23 · 6 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, Prendick enters the sea and threatens to drown rather than face what he believes is Moreau’s torture, while urging the Beast Men to resist their masters. Moreau claims the creatures are altered animals, not men, and offers loaded revolvers, persuading Prendick to come ashore despite his continuing distrust.

What happens

  1. Prendick follows the beach toward the enclosure, hoping to find a weapon, but encounters Moreau, Montgomery, and their companions.
  2. He wades into the sea and threatens to drown rather than submit to torture.

  4. Moreau says the creatures are animals made human through vivisection and identifies the enclosure’s victim as the puma.
  5. Moreau and Montgomery leave their revolvers and withdraw; Prendick comes ashore, tests a weapon, and agrees to accompany them.
  6. Montgomery controls the bewildered Beast Men with his whip as Prendick passes them carrying both revolvers.
