Chapter 7 of 12 · 22 min to read the chapter
In Chapter 7, Gustavus Vassa earns enough through trading to purchase his freedom from Robert King, with his captain’s support, but discovers that freedom offers little protection against abuse in Georgia. He remains aboard as a paid sailor, survives a dangerous voyage during which the captain dies, and brings the vessel safely to Montserrat.
What happens
- Profitable trading brings Gustavus close to freedom, although a silversmith’s supposed fortune proves almost worthless.
- With the captain’s support, Gustavus pays Robert King for his freedom and receives a signed manumission.
- He stays aboard as a paid sailor despite wanting to return to London.
- In Georgia, Mr. Read threatens him with whipping, and he hides until the captain retrieves the warrant against him.
- The captain refuses his promised bullocks but persuades him to buy turkeys, which survive the voyage while the cattle die.
- After the captain dies at sea, Gustavus brings the leaking vessel safely to Montserrat and gains recognition for his seamanship.
