The Idiot, Chapter 5 summary

Chapter 5 of 50 · Part 1 · 26 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 5, Prince Muishkin joins Mrs. Epanchin and her daughters for lunch, and his manners and conversation challenge their expectations of his intelligence. His memories of recovery in Switzerland and accounts of condemned men turn their teasing questions into a discussion of happiness, death, and the difficulty of valuing every moment.

What happens

  1. The general introduces Prince Muishkin as a needy relative with fits, then leaves him with his wife and daughters.
  2. The prince explains his copied signature of Abbot Pafnute, eats lunch, and pleases Mrs. Epanchin through conversation about their families.
  3. In the sitting room, he describes how a donkey in Basel interrupts his melancholy and how recovery makes daily life precious.
  4. He recounts a condemned man's reprieve, but admits that the man does not fulfill his resolve to treasure every minute.
  5. Asked for a painting subject, he describes the face of a man approaching the guillotine and imagines his final thoughts.
  6. The daughters question him about love and their faces; he denies romantic experience and offers to explain another kind of happiness.
