What this book is

What would you do if a dead grandfather left you a house in the Indiana woods, and one year of obedience was the price? John Glenarm is an engineer who has spent his fortune wandering from the Danube to the Sudan. Now he must live for twelve months at Glenarm House or lose everything. On his first night, a bullet smashes through the dining room window and lands flattened beside his hand.

The House of a Thousand Candles is an adventure novel by Meredith Nicholson, published in 1905. John tells it himself, in a quick, joking voice. You get a hidden fortune, a secret tunnel, a smooth rival, a loyal friend from Ireland, and a girl in a red tam-o'-shanter.

A strange will sends John to Indiana

John Glenarm, twenty-seven, has just landed from Naples after a letter chased him around the Mediterranean in October 1901. It comes from Arthur Pickering, executor of the will of John's grandfather. John and Pickering have disliked each other since boyhood.

The will leaves John Glenarm House and its hundred acres in Indiana. He must live there one full year and behave in an orderly way. If he fails, everything goes to a young woman named Marian Devereux, niece of a nun known as Sister Theresa. A second clause says that if John and Miss Devereux promise to marry within five years, the estate goes to the nun's school. John laughs, since he has never met the woman.

Pickering says the expected fortune has shrunk to about ten thousand dollars in securities and an unfinished house. John knows he has treated his grandfather badly. Out of shame and loyalty, he signs. Why does the executor seem so pleased? A promise to the dead can be a better reason to act than any hope of gain.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
