The Hill of Dreams in short

The Hill of Dreams follows one young man from a haunted hillside to a gray London room. Lucian sees a burning sky above a Roman fort as a boy, and an hour of dream inside it marks him. Poverty and scorn push him into books, a stolen manuscript fills him with rage, and a night with Annie Morgan sets his imagination alight.

What The Hill of Dreams is about

What does a boy see when the sky above an old Roman fort burns like an open furnace? Lucian Taylor, the son of a poor country rector, never forgets it. That red evening and the ring of twisted oaks on the hill follow him all his life.

The Hill of Dreams is a novel by Arthur Machen. It follows Lucian from a schoolboy's wanderings through the lanes near Caermaen to a bare room in the London suburbs, where he gives everything to the art of writing.

Who it’s for. You will love this book if you enjoy lush, musical prose, haunted landscapes, Roman ruins and old stories of Britain, and if you are drawn to artists who give up everything for one vision of beauty.

The story in 10 parts

A winter sunset fixes the fort in Lucian's mind

Lucian Taylor, a schoolboy home for the holidays, leaves the main road one January afternoon and follows an old lane worn ten feet deep by winter floods. High hedges close over him, and he thrills at the feeling that he has travelled from the known into the unknown.

Then the weather changes. The clouds break apart, and the sky turns crimson as if furnace doors stand open. The old Roman fort burns against the sky, crowned by black oaks with twisted trunks.

Lucian stands amazed and almost terrified. That night a storm wakes him from a dream in which he stands inside the fort, doing some dark deed, while a blast of flame falls on him from heaven. On the way home he also passes Annie Morgan, a farmer's daughter, who glides by in the dusk like a pale figure.

A place can fix itself in a young mind long before the mind understands it.

What brings Lucian back to writing after the theft of his manuscript?

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • Lucian Taylor A dreamy rector's son who loves strange old books and longs to make true literature, whatever it costs him.
  • Mr. Taylor Lucian's father, a poor, learned clergyman with a dry grin who loves his son but thinks writing should accompany a practical profession.
  • Annie Morgan A pale, black-eyed farmer's daughter whose kindness in a dark lane changes Lucian's life and becomes his symbol of love.
  • Miss Deacon Lucian's practical cousin, who keeps house and writes him letters urging him to find honest work and eat proper dinners.
  • Dr. Burrows The gruff, pun-loving doctor of Caermaen, who pities Lucian and is one of the few people to treat him kindly.
  • Mr. and Mrs. Dixon The vicar and his wife, smug and gossiping leaders of Caermaen society who judge the Taylors harshly.
  • Mr. Ritson A London author whose book The Chorus in Green is built on ninety pages of Lucian's rejected manuscript.

How it ends (spoiler)

Lucian sits at his desk in a London storm, sunk in a long vision of the fort, Annie and the Sabbath. A bronze-haired woman and a man named Joe find him dead in the chair, an empty blue bottle beside him. They call it death by misadventure. His manuscript, which he thought beautiful, looks to them like meaningless scribble. As the blazing lamp is set beside his manuscript, light shines through his dead eyes and a glow within recalls open furnace doors.

Questions about The Hill of Dreams

What is The Hill of Dreams about?

It follows Lucian Taylor, a clergyman's son who grows up near a Roman fort, dreams of a golden ancient city and tries to become a great writer. The novel traces his hopes, his poverty and his deepening hold on a world of dreams.

Is The Hill of Dreams a true story?

No, it is a novel. Machen drew on the landscape of his own boyhood near the old Roman town of Caerleon, and the town of Caermaen in the book is modelled on it. Lucian's story is invented.

What does the Roman fort mean in the book?

The fort on the hill is the book's central symbol. It stands for Lucian's first vision, his shame and desire, and the pull of the past. Its fire and ring of oaks return in his dreams and fears.

Who is Avallaunius?

Avallaunius is the name Lucian takes in his imagined Roman city of Siluria. In that golden town he rules a villa, watches plays and drinks in a strange tavern. It is the dream-world he builds for himself and for Annie.

Is The Hill of Dreams easy to read?

It rewards a relaxed pace. The story moves in clear scenes, with comic episodes in the village and vivid dream passages. Machen's musical sentences are made to be heard, so reading aloud brings out their charm.
