The Didache, Chapter 16 summary

Chapter 16 of 16 · 1 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 16, believers receive instructions to stay ready, gather often, and maintain their faith through the final testing. The warning describes growing hatred, a deceiver claiming divine identity, and signs that lead to resurrection and the Lord’s appearance with his saints.

What happens

  1. Believers must guard their lives, remain ready, and meet often because the hour of the Lord’s arrival is unknown.
  2. The warning describes false prophets multiplying, love becoming hatred, and people persecuting and betraying one another.
  3. A world deceiver claims to be the Son of God, performs wonders, receives power over the earth, and commits unprecedented outrages.
  4. Humanity faces fiery testing; many abandon faith and perish, but those who remain faithful receive salvation.
  5. An opening in heaven, a trumpet sound, and a limited resurrection precede the Lord’s visible arrival on heavenly clouds.
