Who it’s for

You will love this book if you enjoy character studies, small-town satire, stories of faith and doubt, or sharp portraits of ambition and vanity.

What this book is

What happens to a good man when he meets people who seem smarter than he is? Harold Frederic asks this in The Damnation of Theron Ware, a novel published in 1896. It follows a young Methodist minister in upstate New York who begins as sincere, hardworking and a little naive.

Theron hopes for the richest pulpit in the district and is sent to a smaller town called Octavius. There he meets a stern board of trustees, a worldly priest, a cold scientist, a clever revivalist and a red-haired organist.

A crowded church sends Theron to Octavius

The novel opens at the closing session of a Methodist Conference in Tecumseh. A thousand faces watch a nearsighted Bishop read out the list of appointments. The congregation wants its man, the Reverend Theron Ware, after a fine sermon from him.

He names a lanky old preacher for the grand church, and the crowd groans. Theron is sent to Octavius, a poor posting in a rough Irish mill town, and his wife Alice weeps in the street.

In the parsonage we learn how they met, how they laughed through early marriage, and how debt nearly crushed them until a neighbour named Abram Beekman cleared it.

Theron is gifted, eager and a little vain, and he longs to be a great speaker. His hunger for praise is the first thing to notice about him.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
