The Cruise of the "Cachalot": Round the World After Sperm Whales in short

The Cruise of the Cachalot follows one voyage from a New Bedford street to the far corners of the whaling world. Bullen signs on blind, learns the work, and sees what happens when a whale is cut apart and boiled into oil. He is honest about the captain's cruelty and the broken spirit of the men.

What The Cruise of the "Cachalot": Round the World After Sperm Whales is about

Picture yourself eighteen, penniless, and walking the streets of New Bedford, Massachusetts. A tall stranger with a goatlike beard asks if you are looking for a ship. You sign papers you cannot follow, and you are rowed out to a vessel whose name you read only as you pass her stern. She is the Cachalot, a whaler.

Frank T. Bullen wrote this account of a voyage he made as a young seaman, to show the South Sea sperm whale fishery from a working sailor's view. You get the full voyage in order, with a cruel captain, a giant fourth mate and a gentle harpooner from the Pacific.

Who it’s for. This is for readers who love real sea adventure, ship life and whaling lore, and for anyone curious about remote islands, great whales and the men who hunted them.

A penniless sailor signs onto an unknown ship

Bullen begins at eighteen, after six years at sea, with empty pockets in New Bedford. A tall man with a goatlike beard offers him a berth, and he signs the articles without understanding a word. He knows nothing of the ship, the pay or the length of the voyage. He calls himself a young fool.

He reads Cachalot of New Bedford under her stern, then realizes alongside that she is a whaler. She is a stubby old barque, nothing like the sleek English clippers he knows. The forecastle is crowded and foul. He meets the huge fourth mate, Mister Jones, whom the officers call Goliath, and learns at once to say sir.

The ship sails the same day, and the cruelty is already plain. The officers curse and beat the seasick landsmen. Bullen can steer, so he is spared most of it, but he suffers from watching. Captain Slocum rules by fear, and his mates copy him.

A man who agrees to everything must now learn the trade under a harsh command.

Questions about The Cruise of the "Cachalot": Round the World After Sperm Whales

What is The Cruise of the Cachalot about?

It is Frank Bullen's first-hand account of a whaling voyage on the New Bedford barque Cachalot. It covers the hunt for sperm whales, the work of boiling down the blubber, life under a harsh captain, and visits to remote islands.

Is The Cruise of the Cachalot a true story?

It is presented as a true account drawn from Bullen's own experience as a young seaman. He stresses that his facts come from direct observation, and he withholds names where identification might cause pain or annoyance. The preface bears the date July 1897.

What does cachalot mean?

Cachalot is an old name for the sperm whale. Bullen uses it for the whales the crew hunts and for the ship's name. He also explains that sperm whales have teeth, and that their heads hold spermaceti.

Who are Goliath and Mister Count?

Mister Jones, nicknamed Goliath, is the enormous and skilled fourth mate. Mister Count is the first mate, a rough but fair whaleman. Both shape Bullen's life aboard, and Count later takes command of the ship.

Is The Cruise of the Cachalot worth reading today?

Yes for anyone curious about the sea, whales and the age of sail. Bullen writes in a lively first-person voice, with vivid scenes, humor, and clear explanations of how whaling worked. It also shows a crew's daily life.
