Chapter 86 of 117 · Volume 4 · 18 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 86, Beauchamp tells Albert how a newspaper accusation leads to an inquiry into his father’s conduct at Yanina, where Haydée identifies Morcerf as the officer who betrays her family. Her documents and testimony overturn his persuasive defense, and the committee unanimously finds him guilty after he leaves without answering the charges.

What happens

  1. Albert visits Beauchamp, who explains that another newspaper publishes accusations against Morcerf after receiving supporting documents from a man arriving from Yanina.
  2. The House of Peers orders an investigation, and Morcerf requests an immediate hearing before a committee of twelve.
  3. Beauchamp secretly watches Morcerf impress the committee with letters, Ali Pasha’s ring, and claims of loyal service.
  4. Haydée appears, proves her identity, and presents a record naming Fernand Mondego as the officer who sells her and her mother.
  5. She identifies Morcerf, describes his betrayal, and points to the wound on his hand as a distinguishing mark.
  6. Morcerf offers no answer and rushes out; the committee unanimously declares him guilty, and Haydée leaves without displaying pleasure or pity.
