Chapter 113 of 117 · Volume 5 · 17 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 113, Monte Cristo revisits the Château d’If to confront his doubts about revenge, and his memories and Faria’s manuscript restore his confidence. He then finds Maximilian Morrel at the cemetery, uses his own suffering to encourage patience, and secures Morrel’s promise to meet him on October 5.

What happens

  1. Troubled by Edward’s death and his conversation with Mercédès, Monte Cristo retraces his journey to the Château d’If.
  2. The concierge recounts the prisoners’ escape story without recognizing Monte Cristo, whose memories revive his desire for vengeance.
  3. In Faria’s cell, Monte Cristo asks for guidance and accepts the recovered manuscript’s epigraph as an answer.
  4. Monte Cristo rewards the concierge, leaves the prison, and speaks Haydée’s name tenderly as he passes the Catalans.
  5. At the cemetery, he tells Maximilian Morrel a disguised account of his own suffering and asks him to remain patient.
  6. Morrel renews his promise, receives instructions for their October meeting, and accompanies the count to his departing steamer.
