Key point 1 of 10
A child watches a marriage arranged over tea
The title story is told through Grisha, a boy of seven. He sees a match being made in the family kitchen and cannot understand it. The nurse has brought a cabman named Danilo Semyonitch to meet Pelageya, the cook. The grown-ups treat it as business, while the child treats it as a mystery.
The cabman is careful and proud. He refuses vodka and mentions his earnings with a sideways glance at Pelageya. She drops plates, oversalts the dinner and swears she will never marry him. Grisha decides marriage must be shameful, and he dreams that a witch carries her off.
The wedding comes fast. The next morning the cabman asks the mistress for five rubles from her wages to buy a horse collar. Grisha sees that a stranger now rules the cook's money, and he is troubled almost to tears. He slips the biggest apple from the storeroom into her hand.
A child's plain sympathy can see an injustice that adults have learned to call normal.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
