Key point 1 of 10

A rescued beast is reborn as Hai Rui

The story opens with Hai Xuan, a kind scholar of Muxian village in Guangdong. He reaches forty-three without a child. His wife begs him to take a concubine, but he refuses, saying good deeds will settle the matter.

One day a violent storm breaks. A hairy creature with golden feathers drops into his study and hides under the desk. Hai Xuan shields it with his own body, and every thunderbolt aimed at him goes out. Months later his wife knows she is with child. He dreams of three men in blue, who tell him the creature is a zhi beast that eats fierce tigers and protects weak birds. It must now be born as a human.

The child is named Hai Rui. At seven he makes the neighborhood children share their food equally. At ten he loses his father, and his mother drills him in the classics. At thirteen he refuses the early examinations, because he wants real learning and not show. Hai Rui's justice is born with him, and his mother shapes it.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
