The Book of Mormon, Part 4 summary

Part 4 of 17 · 35 min to read the part

In The Book of Jacob The Brother of Nephi, Jacob receives the sacred plates, condemns wealth-based pride and sexual sins, and uses Zenos’s olive-tree teaching to urge repentance and faith in Christ. After Sherem challenges his teaching, suffers divine punishment, recants, and dies, peace returns among the people, and Jacob entrusts the plates to Enos.

What happens

  1. Nephi assigns Jacob responsibility for sacred records, appoints a king, and dies.
  2. Jacob condemns pride, mistreatment of poorer neighbors, and sexual sins that wound wives and children.
  3. Jacob praises Lamanite family faithfulness and commands his people to stop insulting them because of their skin.
  4. Jacob recounts Zenos’s vineyard teaching, in which persistent care restores good fruit, and urges his hearers to repent.
  5. Sherem denies Christ, demands a sign, falls under divine power, retracts his teaching publicly, and dies.
  6. Peace returns, conflict with the Lamanites continues, and the aging Jacob passes the plates to Enos.
