Who it’s for

For readers who love warm, witty stories about a person finding her nerve, romance with real humor, and the beauty of lakes and woods.

What this book is

The Blue Castle is a novel by L. M. Montgomery, published in 1926. Montgomery was already loved for Anne of Green Gables, but this book is different. It is written for adults, and its heroine is not a lively girl. She is a woman of twenty-nine who has never been allowed to do anything she wanted.

The story takes place in the small Ontario town of Deerwood, in the Muskoka lake country. Valancy Stirling lives in a stuffy house with her strict mother and her nervous cousin. Her large family treats her as a dull spinster, and she has almost come to agree with them. Her only escape is a daydream of a beautiful castle in Spain, bright blue and far away, where she is loved and free. Then one letter gives her a reason to stop pretending.

The book gives you comedy, romance and a sharp look at how families and small towns can shrink a person. It also gives you lovely pages about lakes, woods and weather. Let us begin where Valancy begins, in a life so narrow that even her daydreams have to be kept secret.

Key point 1 of 9

A woman who has never lived

Valancy Stirling is twenty-nine, and in Deerwood that makes her an old maid. She lives with her mother, Mrs. Frederick Stirling, and her mother's cousin, Cousin Stickles. Both women watch her every move. Valancy has never earned money, never gone anywhere alone and never been courted. She sleeps in a small room and wears the dull clothes her mother picks out.

The Stirlings are a clan, and the clan has opinions about everything. There are uncles and aunts who meet at one another's houses to judge the family and the neighbors. Valancy's mother is the strictest of them. She decides what Valancy may read, who she may visit and what she should think. When Valancy disagrees, even slightly, she is made to feel foolish or ungrateful.

The family also has a favorite. Her cousin Olive is young, pretty and admired, and the relatives never tire of pointing out the difference between the two girls. Valancy has learned to keep quiet, smile and say yes. She has done this so long that she hardly notices how much of herself she has hidden away.

Still, she has one private place. In her mind she keeps the Blue Castle, a lovely palace that she has built since childhood. In it she is beautiful and brave, and a dark, mysterious hero comes to love her. She retreats there whenever the real house feels too small to breathe in.

She has another comfort too. She secretly reads the nature books of a writer named John Foster, which her family would think odd or improper. His pages about woods and water make her feel that a larger world exists. Those books and that castle are all she has, and the story starts when she begins to wonder if they could be enough to change her.
