What this book is
A man sits under a shop awning in a thunderstorm and flies a paper kite. Its tail carries strips of litmus paper, and he is perfectly calm. That is how The Black Pearl opens, in Amsterdam, on a summer evening.
Victorien Sardou, a French playwright, wrote this mystery novella, and it moves like a small stage comedy. A house is ransacked, a locket set with black pearls is gone, and a police commissioner says he knows the thief. You get a lively puzzle and two ways of looking at it.

A scholar flies a kite in a storm
The story opens with loud weather. A gust from the Zuider Zee rattles shutters along the Amstel and carries the hat of Balthazar Van der Lys into the canal. Balthazar, a warm and good-natured man, runs for home before the rain can soak him. It soaks him anyway.
He dives under a shop awning and lands in the lap of his friend Cornelius Pamp, the most learned man in the city. Cornelius sits calmly holding a string. At the end of it floats a paper kite with a tail hung with strips of litmus paper. He is testing whether nitric acid is present in charged clouds, and the red strips tell him it is.
Then a copper-red flash strikes the ground, and Cornelius is delighted, because he has seen his spherical lightning at last. Balthazar bolts for home, afraid for his house. Cornelius follows, holding his chair over his head. At the door, the young housemaid Christiane takes a while to answer. She is deathly pale, and her hands shake.
Odd details in a calm opening can matter later.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about The Black Pearl
What is The Black Pearl by Victorien Sardou about?
It tells of a stormy night in Amsterdam when a study is ransacked and a locket set with black pearls disappears. A police commissioner accuses the young housemaid Christiane, while a scholar named Cornelius searches for proof of her innocence.
Who is Mr. Tricamp in The Black Pearl?
He is the police commissioner who arrives after the burglary. Short, stout and nearsighted, he believes a crime shows the character of its author, and he builds a confident case against Christiane from the damage in the study.
What does the black pearl mean in the story?
The black pearl comes from a locket Balthazar keeps for Suzanne. A single pearl found in Christiane's drawer seems to prove her guilty, and the story shows how a small object can mean opposite things to different people.
Is The Black Pearl easy to read?
The tale is told in eleven short chapters, mostly in lively dialogue, by a friendly narrator. Its quick scenes and clear comic characters make it simple to follow from the first storm to the last page.
What is the main message of The Black Pearl?
The story suggests that suspicion based on a person's past can mislead, and that loyalty and careful observation are better guides than a neat theory. Looking closely at small facts matters more than a confident explanation.
