Chapter 9 of 12 · 32 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 9, Victor Hatherley brings his injured hand to a doctor and describes how a secret repair job becomes an attempt to kill him. Sherlock Holmes identifies a counterfeiting operation near Eyford, but the suspects escape, and a fire destroys most of their machinery.

What happens

  1. A railway guard brings Victor Hatherley to the doctor, who treats his missing thumb and takes him to Sherlock Holmes.
  2. Hatherley describes accepting fifty guineas to inspect Colonel Lysander Stark’s hydraulic press despite suspicious demands for secrecy.
  3. At the house, Hatherley ignores a woman’s warning, identifies the mechanical fault, and discovers evidence that contradicts Stark’s explanation.
  4. Stark traps Hatherley inside the working press, but the woman frees him; Stark cuts off his thumb during his escape.
  5. Holmes identifies counterfeiters and deduces that the long carriage journey circles back toward Eyford rather than reaching a distant house.
  6. The investigators find the house burning, the suspects gone, and evidence suggesting that two people carry Hatherley to safety.
