Prophecy frames the Zheng family story
Before the Zheng family appears, Jiang follows the Ming general Zhou Dexing as he builds coastal garrisons. Near Shijing, a ridge looks like a flying dragon, and Dexing orders workers to cut it. That night, two figures in a dream warn him that the land is reserved for a worthy man whose descendants will become feudal lords.
At dawn, carved characters convince him to leave the ridge alone. This opening makes the family's rise feel like fate unfolding through human decisions.

Key point 1 of 10
A Ming general's dream foretells five Zheng generations
The book begins in the first years of the Ming dynasty, long before the Zhengs appear. The Marquis Zhou Dexing builds coastal garrisons for Emperor Taizu, and Jiang starts here to trace the story to its source.
Near Shijing, Dexing sees a ridge that surges like a flying dragon and calls for laborers to cut it. That night two figures kneel in his dream. They warn that the land is guarded for a worthy man, and that five generations of feudal lords will rise from it and bring grief to the dynasty.
At dawn he finds four characters carved on a boulder by the scholar Zhu Xi. He takes this as a sign from Heaven and sends the workers home. Zhilong is born in 1604 as his mother dreams of red cloud heaped in her arms.
Jiang opens with prophecy so that the Zheng story reads as fate working through human choices.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.
