Sons and Lovers, Chapter 13 summary

Chapter 13 of 15 · Part 2 · 58 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 13, Paul Morel clashes with Baxter Dawes over Clara, and their hostility leads to workplace violence, dismissal, and a court hearing. Paul admits that his attachment to his mother blocks commitment, while his intense intimacy with Clara gives him peace without giving her the lasting security she wants.

What happens

  1. Dawes insults Clara at the Punch Bowl, and Paul throws beer in his face before the bouncer removes Dawes.
  2. Paul hides the quarrel from his mother and refuses Clara’s pleas to carry a weapon against her husband.
  3. Dawes threatens Paul at work and knocks Thomas Jordan downstairs; Jordan dismisses him, but the assault case is dismissed.
  4. Paul tells his mother that he cannot give himself fully to Clara or Miriam while she remains alive.
  5. Beside the canal, Paul refuses promises about their future; intense physical intimacy brings peace but leaves Clara insecure.
  6. Their conflicting needs cause further arguments, and in spring they stay near Theddlethorpe and enjoy the coast together.
