What this book is
What if one small lie could ruin a whole night for two gentlemen and a country household? In She Stoops to Conquer, Oliver Goldsmith answers the sentimental comedies of his day with honest laughter. First staged in London in 1773, the play rests on one large mistake that grows with every scene. Two young men ride into the country, and a joker sends them to what they think is an inn. It is really the home of the girl one of them has come to meet. A clever young woman turns the muddle to her own use.

A country house stuck in the past
Mr Hardcastle loves old friends, old customs and old ways. His wife longs for London fashions and calls their home dull. Her son Tony Lumpkin prefers the alehouse to the drawing room and loves a practical joke.
Mrs Hardcastle guards the jewels of her niece Constance Neville and wants her to marry Tony. Neither young person wants the match. Constance loves another man.
Kate Hardcastle is lively and sensible. Her father has arranged for her to meet Charles Marlow, a possible husband. He warns that the young man is a little shy. That remark is the key to the whole play.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
