Key ideas

Selected Sermons of Jonathan Edwards · Jonathan Edwards1 of 8
  1. Key idea 1

Every good thing is a gift

Edwards begins with a claim that leaves pride without support: salvation depends completely on God. Christ gives believers wisdom, forgiveness, a changed heart and rescue. Even the faith by which they receive these gifts comes from God, rather than from their own strength.

This dependence reaches into everything good. God is its source, its means and the good itself. For Edwards, recognizing this does not divide attention between human achievement and divine help. It gathers faith, humility and praise around God alone.

    Faith involves tasting divine beauty

Knowing religious teachings is not the same as sensing their beauty.

Who it’s for

Readers who enjoy carefully argued sermons, vivid imagery and heartfelt appeals will love this collection. It suits students of Puritan thought and those curious about how a preacher moved a New England congregation.

What this book is

What would you do if a preacher told you that nothing but a hand you cannot see keeps you from a pit? In Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Jonathan Edwards says exactly that.

This book gathers seven sermons by Edwards, the New England minister and theologian who died in 1758. He preached them to ordinary congregations, and he meant them to change lives. Each takes a verse, draws a doctrine from it, argues it step by step, and then speaks straight to the listener. Begin with the first idea, that everything good comes from God alone.

Salvation leaves us nothing to boast about

Edwards opens with a verse from First Corinthians, where Paul says that no one may boast in God's presence. Corinth lay near Athens, famous for philosophy, yet the philosophers never found the truth about God. So God chose what looked foolish, the gospel, to shame the clever and the strong.

The verse names four things Christ becomes for believers: wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption. Wisdom is light for the mind. Righteousness is forgiveness. Sanctification is a changed heart, and redemption is rescue together with the gift of glory. The Father gives Christ, the Son is our good, and the Spirit gives us faith, which is itself a gift.

From this Edwards draws his doctrine. God is glorified in redemption because the redeemed depend on him completely. If every good thing arrives as a gift, pride has nothing left to stand on. Salvation is built so that all the credit goes to God and none to us.

That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about Selected Sermons of Jonathan Edwards

What is Selected Sermons of Jonathan Edwards about?

It collects seven sermons by Edwards on God's glory in salvation, divine light, Ruth's loyalty, heaven's many rooms, sin and judgment, the loss of a ruler, and a farewell to his church. Each applies a Bible verse to daily life.

What is Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God about?

It argues that unconverted people are kept from hell only by God's will. Edwards uses images of a bent bow, rising floods and a thread over a fire, then urges listeners to flee to Christ while mercy is open.

What does Edwards mean by a divine and supernatural light?

He means a real sense of the beauty and excellence of God and the gospel, not only belief in doctrines. He compares it to tasting honey rather than being told it is sweet. It comes directly from the Spirit.

Who was Ruth in the sermon Ruth's Resolution?

Ruth was a Moabite woman who left her homeland to stay with her mother-in-law Naomi and to serve the God of Israel. Edwards presents her as a picture of a sincere convert, in contrast to Orpah, who turned back.

What is the main message of these sermons?

The main message is that all good comes from God, that the soul needs his light and grace, and that each person should turn to Christ without delay. Edwards joins careful argument with direct appeals to the listener.
