Who it’s for

This book suits readers who love fairy tales told with a wink, comic fantasy, English and German folklore, and witches, giants, river spirits and clever heroes.

What this book is

Picture a hot summer day at Eton. You are forty-five, and you have spent the afternoon among old memories on the playing fields and in Poet's Walk. Then you settle in the shade near Surly Hall and fall asleep.

Voices wake you. On a little reedy island in the Thames, two kings with crowns sit at a deal table with a huge pewter pot between them. One has a white beard to his waist. The other is dark, with a magnificent black mustache. This is River Legends, by Edward Knatchbull-Hugessen, an English politician and writer who told fairy tales with a smile. The kings strike a bargain to pass the evening telling the legends of their banks, and six follow, full of jokes, morals and quarrels over drink.

Two river kings and a giant boar

The kings are friendly but proud. Father Rhine finds English ale stronger than the drink of his own river. Father Thames darkens and says he will never forsake his ale. Then an enormous eagle drops from the sky with silver flagons, and Father Rhine drains his wine with great satisfaction.

Each has his own drink and his own river, says Father Thames, so let each enjoy his own. They agree to tell the legends of their banks, and Father Thames goes first.

His tale begins in the days before Eton College. Windsor Forest runs down to the river, and its king is the Great Boar of Windsor. He is enormous and strong, and his grunts are repeated as prophecies. But his tribe also tears up the farms, and no pit or dog can stop such a cunning beast.

Then a poor woman dreams she will have the largest family in the world. Only one child arrives, but he is huge and wise before he can talk. One day he winks, touches his nose and says one word, Smith. The orphan later wanders into the forest, and the toads take him in. They guard buried treasure, and Smith plays leapfrog with them, learns their magic and grows as strong as Hercules.

A great threat in these tales calls for a hero raised in odd and unexpected places.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about River Legends; Or, Father Thames and Father Rhine

What is River Legends about?

It is a collection of comic folk tales told by two river kings, Father Thames and Father Rhine, who meet on an island at Eton. They swap stories of boars, demons, giants, witches and a medieval knight.

Who are Father Thames and Father Rhine?

They are the spirits of the two rivers, shown as kings. Thames is white-bearded and loves English ale, while Rhine is dark-mustached and loves Rhine wine. They tell the legends of their own banks in turn.

Is River Legends a true story?

No, it is a literary fairy-tale collection from the Victorian age. The author draws on the style of old folk legends but invents the tales himself, adding jokes about his own time.

Is River Legends easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that it is friendly. The tales are told aloud by chatty kings with lots of humor. Each legend stands alone, and verse passages and short dialogues keep the pace lively.

What is the main message of River Legends?

Cruelty and malice come back on those who practice them, while courage, kindness and loyalty are rewarded. The frame also teaches tolerance, since each king should enjoy his own drink and his own river.
