Rip Van Winkle, Part 1 summary

Part 1 of 2 · 24 min to read the part

In Rip Van Winkle, a man escaping farm work and his wife drinks with mysterious mountain players and sleeps through twenty years of change. He returns to a transformed village, reunites with his grown daughter, and resumes his idle habits, free from his marriage and largely indifferent to political independence.

What happens

  1. Rip helps neighbors but neglects his farm, while his wife scolds him and disrupts his refuge among the village idlers.
  2. Hunting in the mountains, Rip helps a stranger carry liquor to silent ninepins players, drinks repeatedly, and falls asleep.
  3. He wakes with a rusty gun and no dog, then finds the mountain path blocked and his village transformed.
  4. Election crowds challenge his loyalty to the king, and reports about old neighbors deepen his confusion.
  5. Judith Gardenier identifies herself as his daughter, an old neighbor recognizes him, and Peter Vanderdonk supports his mountain story.
  6. Rip lives with Judith, returns to the inn bench, and tells his story while villagers differ over its truth.
