R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), Act 2 summary

Act 2 of 6 · 28 min to read the act

In Act 2, Helena’s anniversary celebration exposes stopped births, Robot rebellion, and the managers’ dangerous confidence that they can retain control through the manufacturing secret. Helena burns old papers, while the arriving ship carries extermination orders rather than reassurance, and Robots surround the house and signal an attack.

What happens

  1. Domin and his colleagues celebrate Helena’s arrival ten years earlier, while hiding interrupted communications and fears of Robot rebellion.
  2. Newspapers reveal massacres, organized Robots, and absent births; Alquist and Dr. Gall express fear for humanity.
  3. Radius rejects human authority, but Helena protects him from destruction, and Gall observes his unusually human fear.
  4. After discussing the manufacturing manuscript with Gall, Helena burns old papers despite her distress.
  5. The managers mistake a punctual ship for safety, and Domin proposes dividing Robots by nationality to prevent unity.
  6. The ship brings extermination orders; Robots seize the escape vessel, surround the house, and sound the attack signal.
