Gwen brings trouble to the shore
Polly and Rose can hardly wait to reach Cliffmore, where Sprite lives in a home made from an upturned ship. Their journey aboard Captain Atherton’s yacht promises a summer of friendship and play. Gwen Harcourt says she does not want to come, but she is already waiting when they arrive.
Her mother has given in to her demands again. Gwen’s rude visits and invented adventures show what happens when a parent treats bad behavior as something clever: everyone around the child must live with the results.

Key point 1 of 8
Gwen arrives at Cliffmore before anyone expects her
The story opens in Avondale, where Polly and Rose can think of nothing but the shore. They remember Sprite dressed as a mermaid on the rocks, and her home made from the hull of a ship, turned upside down and split into rooms. This year the girls will finish the trip by water on Captain Atherton's yacht, the Dolphin.
Then Gwen Harcourt comes racing up the avenue. She walks into any house with an open door and stays as long as she likes. This morning she has marched in on new neighbors and judged them rudely. She announces that she does not want to go to Cliffmore, hiding the fact that her demands to go have failed.
Polly and Rose notice something sad. Mrs. Harcourt tells Gwen's rude pranks as if they were clever. Gwen screamed for half an hour, and for the first time it did not work. Her mother gives in the next day anyway. When the Dolphin reaches the pier, Gwen is perched on a tall post, calling that she got there first. A young sailor frightens her, and she tells an invented story about being dunked. Her dress is bone dry, and a small boy named Max Deland laughs out loud.
A child who is applauded for rudeness learns to be rude, and everyone nearby must live with it.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.
