In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

  2. 1

    Wan‑najmi idha hawa

By the Star when it setteth,

  3. 2

    مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ

    Ma dalla sahibukum wama ghawa

    Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived;

  4. 3

    Wama yantiqu 'ani al‑hawa

Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire.

  5. 4

    In huwa illa wahyun yuha

It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired,

  6. 5

    'Allamahu shadidu al‑quwa

Which one of mighty powers hath taught him,

  7. 6

    Dhu mirratin fastawa

One vigorous; and he grew clear to view

  8. 7

    Wahuwa bil-'ufuqi al‑a'la

When he was on the uppermost horizon.

  9. 8

    Thumma dana fatadalla

Then he drew nigh and came down

  10. 9

    Fakana qaba qawsayni aw adna

Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer,

  11. 10

    Fa'awha ila 'abdihi ma awha

And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed.

  12. 11

    Ma kadhaba al‑fu'adu ma ra'a

The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw.

  13. 12

    Afatumarunahu 'ala ma yara

Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth?

  14. 13

    Walaqad ra'ahu nazlatan ukhra

And verily he saw him yet another time

  15. 14

    'Inda sidrati al‑muntaha

By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary,

  16. 15

    'Indaha jannatu al‑ma'wa

Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode.

  17. 16

    Idh yaghsha as‑sidrata ma yaghsha

When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree,

  18. 17

    Ma zagha al‑basaru wama tagha

The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold.

  19. 18

Laqad ra'a min ayati Rabbihi al‑kubra

Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord.

  20. 19

    Afara'aytumu al‑lata wal-'uzza

Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza

  21. 20

    Wamanata ath‑thalithata al‑ukhra

And Manat, the third, the other?

  22. 21

    Alakumu adh‑dhakaru walahu al‑untha

Are yours the males and His the females?

  23. 22

    Tilka idhan qismatun diza

That indeed were an unfair division!

  24. 23

They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them.

  25. 24

    Am lil‑insani ma tamanna

Or shall man have what he coveteth?

  26. 25

    Falillahi al‑akhiratu wal‑ula

But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former.

  27. 26

Wa kam min malakin fi as‑samawati la tughni shafa'atuhum shay'an illa min ba'di an ya'dhana Allahu liman yasha'u wa yarda

And how many angels are in the heavens whose intercession availeth naught save after Allah giveth leave to whom He chooseth and accepteth.

  28. 27

Lo! it is those who disbelieve in the Hereafter who name the angels with the names of females.

  29. 28

And they have no knowledge thereof. They follow but a guess, and lo! a guess can never take the place of the truth.

  30. 29

Fa‑a'rid 'an man tawalla 'an dhikrina wa lam yurid illa al‑hayata ad‑dunya

Then withdraw (O Muhammad) from him who fleeth from Our remembrance and desireth but the life of the world.

  31. 30

Dhalika mablaghuhum mina al-'ilmi inna rabbaka huwa a'lamu biman dalla 'an sabilihi wa huwa a'lamu bimani ihtada

Such is their sum of knowledge. Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth, and He is Best Aware of him whom goeth right.

  32. 31

And unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, that He may reward those who do evil with that which they have done, and reward those who do good with goodness.

  33. 32

Those who avoid enormities of sin and abominations, save the unwilled offences - (for them) lo! thy Lord is of vast mercy. He is Best Aware of you (from the time) when He created you from the earth, and when ye were hidden in the bellies of your mothers. Therefor ascribe not purity unto yourselves. He is Best Aware of him who wardeth off (evil).

  34. 33

    Afa‑ra'ayta alladhi tawalla

Didst thou (O Muhammad) observe him who turned away,

  35. 34

    Wa a'ta qalilan wa akda

And gave a little, then was grudging?

  36. 35

A'indahu 'ilmu al‑ghaybi fa huwa yara

Hath he knowledge of the Unseen so that he seeth?

  37. 36

Am lam yunabba' bima fi suhufi Musa

Or hath he not had news of what is in the books of Moses

  38. 37

    Wa Ibrahima alladhi waffa

And Abraham who paid his debt:

  39. 38

    Alla taziru waziratun wizra ukhra

That no laden one shall bear another's load,

  40. 39

Wa an laysa li‑al‑insani illa ma sa'a

And that man hath only that for which he maketh effort,

  41. 40

    Wa anna sa'yahu sawfa yura

And that his effort will be seen.

  42. 41

    ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ

    Thumma yujzahu al‑jaza'a al‑awfa

    And afterward he will be repaid for it with fullest payment;

  43. 42

    وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ

    Wa anna ila rabbika al‑muntaha

    And that thy Lord, He is the goal;

  44. 43

Wa annahu huwa adhaka wa abka

And that He it is who maketh laugh, and maketh weep,

  45. 44

Wa annahu huwa amata wa ahya

    And that He it is Who giveth death and giveth life;

  46. 45

    Wa annahu khalaqa az‑zawjayni adh‑dhakara wa al‑untha

And that He createth the two spouses, the male and the female,

  47. 46

    مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰ

    Min nutfatin idha tumna

    From a drop (of seed) when it is poured forth;

  48. 47

    وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ

    Wa anna 'alayhi an‑nash'ata al‑ukhra

    And that He hath ordained the second bringing forth;

  49. 48

Wa annahu huwa aghna wa aqna

    And that He it is Who enricheth and contenteth;

  50. 49

    وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ

    Wa annahu huwa rabbu ash‑shi'ra

    And that He it is Who is the Lord of Sirius;

  51. 50

    Wa annahu ahlaka 'adan al‑ula

And that He destroyed the former (tribe of) A'ad,

  52. 51

    وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰ

    Wa thamuda fama abqa

    And (the tribe of) Thamud He spared not;

  53. 52

Wa qawma Nuhin min qablu innahum kanu hum azlama wa atgha

    And the folk of Noah aforetime, Lo! they were more unjust and more rebellious;

  54. 53

    Wal‑mu'tafikata ahwa

    And Al-Mu'tafikah He destroyed

  55. 54

    Faghashshaha ma ghashsha

So that there covered them that which did cover.

  56. 55

Concerning which then, of the bounties of thy Lord, canst thou dispute?
