A happy girl at the manor loses everyone

Anna Vyvyan grows up in an old manor house on the border of Wales. Her father, an officer in Queen Elizabeth's navy, dies in royal service when she is very small. Her mother, a rich and gifted widow, turns away every suitor and gives her life to her daughter. Music is Anna's passion. She plays the church organ and the harpsichord, and outdoors she wonders what key the wind and the brook sing in.

When her cousin Cecil Vyvyan arrives from India, he is a thin, pale boy with a Scottish tutor named Dr. Strickland. Anna is strong and fearless. Cecil is gentle and dislikes cruel sport. Dr. Strickland gives the boy six reasons why love for others calls for courage. Cecil learns that courage can be quiet, and he leans on his cousin's strength. He paints, she sings, and they meet daily beside a small fountain. By twenty, the two are deeply in love.

Then the losses begin. Anna's mother takes her to London to be presented at court. Her mother's cough sends them to Italy and then to Norway, where she dies. A letter from Dr. Strickland tells how Cecil faded and died. Anna can say only three words: O God, alone.

Her guardian, the elderly judge Sir Thomas Richardson, takes her in. After three years of chess and silence he sends her to kin in Virginia aboard the Queen Elizabeth. Anna starts the story with a heart already broken, and that is what makes her next choice matter.
