Our Mutual Friend, Chapter 15 summary

Chapter 15 of 68 · Book 1: The Cup and the Lip · 23 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 15, Mr Boffin hires John Rokesmith to manage his business and arranges for Wegg to keep the Bower, giving both men new responsibilities as the household prepares to move. Memories of the former owner's children move Rokesmith, while Mrs Boffin feels changing faces around the house and remains puzzled after a reassuring search.

What happens

  1. John Rokesmith sorts Mr Boffin's papers, demonstrates his letter writing, and receives a trial appointment with salary left unsettled.
  2. The Boffins explain their move and show Rokesmith the Bower, including the children's pencilled names and the valuable Mounds.
  3. Mr Boffin promises to preserve the house and asks Rokesmith to oversee preparations at the new home.
  4. Wegg accepts responsibility for the Bower at a pound weekly, with coal, candles, and separate payment for reading.
  5. Mrs Boffin interrupts the evening because she feels changing faces throughout the house, though she does not claim to see them.
  6. The Boffins search the buildings and grounds; her fear passes, but the faces remain when she closes her eyes.
