In Chapter 2, Riah and Miss Jenny Wren bring Lizzie Hexam’s paper to Miss Abbey Potterson, who admits wronging Lizzie’s father and renews her offer of shelter. Their visit becomes a river emergency when a steamer strikes a wherry, and the recovered man proves to be Riderhood, whose statement they have just discussed.

What happens

  2. Jenny shows Riah her dolls in a shop window and explains how she copies fashionable women’s dresses.
  3. At the tavern, they defend Lizzie and present the document drawn up by Rokesmith and signed by Riderhood.
  4. Miss Abbey admits wronging Lizzie’s father, offers Lizzie a home, and asks Riah to copy the paper.
  5. News of a river collision interrupts them, and Miss Abbey directs preparations to receive a recovered man.
  6. As the bearers carry the man upstairs, Miss Abbey recognizes Riderhood.
