Book 2: Birds of a Feather, Chapter 14 of 68 · 21 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 14, John Rokesmith resolves to keep his identity as John Harmon hidden, arranges the withdrawal of an accusation against Hexam, and encounters Bradley Headstone’s fierce feelings about Lizzie. He also supports Betty Higden’s decision to leave Sloppy and sell her work around the country, while the Boffins provide supplies and a letter identifying her friends.

What happens

  1. Rokesmith decides that reclaiming his identity would harm the Boffins and trap Bella in a marriage shaped by money.
  2. Mr. Wilfer praises Bella’s generosity but tells Rokesmith that she remains ambitious and probably chooses a wealthy husband.
  3. Betty asks to leave Sloppy and support herself by selling handmade goods, and Rokesmith persuades Mrs Boffin to agree.
  4. Rokesmith arranges lessons for Sloppy with Bradley Headstone, whose anger about Eugene Wrayburn accompanies his discussion of Lizzie.
  5. Rokesmith secures Rogue Riderhood’s withdrawal of his accusation and posts it to Lizzie Hexam.
  6. Betty accepts supplies and a letter from the Boffins, takes Johnny’s toy soldier, and leaves after embracing Bella.
