North and South, Chapter 25 summary

Chapter 25 of 52 · 17 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 25, Margaret struggles with Thornton’s declaration, hears how the riot undermines the strike, and sends for Frederick at her dying mother’s insistence. Mr. Hale explains that Frederick still faces grave danger for mutiny, then approves Margaret’s decision despite his fear, leaving her anxious about the consequences.

What happens

  1. Margaret recognizes that Thornton genuinely loves her, resents his emotional power over her, and leaves to visit Bessy.
  2. Bessy explains the Union’s peaceful strategy and describes how Boucher’s violence devastates her father and damages the strike.
  3. Margaret reads to Bessy until she sleeps, then returns home to find her mother briefly more comfortable.
  4. Memories of Frederick lead Mrs. Hale to demand that Margaret summon him before she dies.
  5. Margaret writes and posts the letter without waiting for her father, yielding to her mother’s distress.
  6. Mr. Hale explains the continuing danger of punishment for mutiny, but endorses Margaret’s action while she remains afraid.
