Norse Mythology, Part 1: The Creation and Preservation of the World, Chapter 2 summary

Part 1: The Creation and Preservation of the World, Chapter 2 of 19 · 4 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 2, Ygdrasil connects the worlds and sustains their creatures, while springs beneath its roots supply wisdom and a meeting place for divine judgment. The account explains Odin’s sacrifice for a drink, the gods’ daily journeys, and the norns’ power over human lives and care for the threatened tree.

What happens

  1. Ygdrasil sustains life throughout the universe, with three roots extending toward the asas, the giants, and Niflheim.
  2. Mimer drinks wisdom-bearing water each morning, and Odin receives a drink by leaving an eye as security.
  3. The gods ride across Bifrost to their council, while Thor wades through rivers and giants cannot cross the bridge.
  4. Urd, Verdande, and Skuld determine human lifespans, while other good and evil norns distribute different fortunes.
  5. Creatures occupy and damage Ygdrasil, and Ratatosk encourages conflict between its eagle and Nidhug.
  6. The norns preserve the tree with sacred water and clay; its dew feeds bees, and the fountain shelters ancestral swans.

What to notice

The tree supports even its attackers. This makes its preservation central to the account of how all creatures share one living structure.

Quick check

Why does Thor walk instead of crossing the gods’ bridge?
