Gospel of the Lots of Mary in short

The book shows two sides of early Christian Egypt. The first is a small Coptic codex made for private consultation. A believer opens it at random and meets a short answer in Mary's name.

What Gospel of the Lots of Mary is about

Picture a believer in Egypt, many centuries ago. A choice weighs on them: a marriage, an illness, a risky journey. A priest's reassurance may not dissolve their dread; they want a word of their own. So they take a small book of papyrus leaves from a pouch, open it at random, and read a few lines in Coptic. The answer is short.

That quiet scene is where this book begins. The Gospel of the Lots of Mary is a Coptic divination manual attributed to the Virgin Mary, dated between the fourth and seventh centuries. Its only known copy reached Harvard in 1984, and Anne Marie Luijendijk published it in 2014. The book also includes a dialogue in which the Savior teaches and Mary comforts the disciples. You will hear both.

Who it’s for. For readers who love early Christian history, Egyptian religion, Marian devotion and ancient oracles, and for anyone curious how ordinary believers sought guidance and comfort.

The 7 key ideas

A pocket oracle from Christian Egypt

The Gospel of the Lots of Mary survives as a small codex, a book of leaves rather than a scroll. It measures roughly ten by eight centimeters. That is small enough for a pouch, and it shows how the book was used. A person carries it, waits for a moment of need, and opens it alone.

The text has a brief prologue and then a series of short oracular answers. The prologue places the work under the name of Mary and presents it as an act of mercy for the faithful in times of trouble. Some answers are warmly reassuring and some are strikingly blunt. Some promise success and blessing. Others advise waiting, warn of deceit, or suggest a change of course.

Together the answers map the outcomes any human plan might meet, from sunny to stormy, and put each into the language of Christian faith. A seeker who opens the book at random takes the answer as a word addressed to them alone. The codex shape matters too. Early Christians adopted the codex for their sacred writings, and this little manuscript sits inside that tradition. Divination was written on the same kind of pages as other sacred texts.

Early Egyptian Christians used a sacred book as a private, personal voice in moments of need.
