Little Women, Chapter 1 summary

Chapter 1 of 47 · Part 1 · 17 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 1, the four March sisters complain about poverty and their daily duties, then decide to spend their Christmas money on gifts for their mother. A letter from their father, who serves as an army chaplain, moves them to face their faults and treat becoming better as a shared pilgrimage.

What happens

  1. Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy complain about money, work, and school while their father is away with the army.
  2. After noticing Mother’s worn slippers, the sisters plan Christmas gifts for her instead of purchases for themselves.
  3. The girls rehearse Jo’s play, laughing over Amy’s awkward fainting and Beth’s distracted toasting.
  4. Mrs. March returns and reads Father’s letter, which urges the girls to support their mother and overcome their faults.
  5. Mother turns their childhood pilgrimage game into a plan for improving themselves, with promised guidebooks for Christmas morning.
  6. The sisters sew sheets without complaining, then finish the evening with their usual family singing.
