In Chapter 30, Blandois presents a business introduction, visits Mrs Clennam, and questions her about a watch whose message concerns remembrance. His interest in the house and its secrets unsettles Flintwinch, but their drinking reveals nothing, and Blandois leaves for the Continent without making his promised return visit.
What happens
- Blandois mistakes Flintwinch for someone else, then presents a letter authorizing assistance and payments of up to fifty pounds.
- Flintwinch finds him nearby lodging, where his appetite and behavior closely resemble Monsieur Rigaud’s.
- During his visit to Mrs Clennam, Blandois unsettles Affery and examines the watch bearing the letters D. N. F.
- Mrs Clennam explains the letters through her refusal to forget and her beliefs about suffering, punishment, and religious duty.
- Blandois tours the house, watches Flintwinch closely, and responds eagerly to his mention of family secrets.
- Three bottles of port fail to loosen Flintwinch’s tongue, and Blandois departs for the Continent without returning the next day.
