Understatement

Literary term · say it un-der-STAYT-munt

Understatement is language that presents something as less serious, important, or intense than it really is. The gap between the words and the situation can create humour, suggest strong feelings held back, or sharpen criticism.

Two ways understatement works

Understatement for humour

A speaker treats something serious as a small matter. The contrast can be funny, even when the situation is painful or dangerous.

In Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio dismisses his wound as a scratch after Tybalt stabs him. His joking description makes the fatal injury sound minor.

In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

Understatement for criticism

Mild, reasonable-sounding language can make something cruel or shocking stand out more sharply. This use often works alongside irony and satire.

In A Modest Proposal, the narrator presents selling poor children as food as a modest practical suggestion. That mild description heightens the horror of the proposal.

In A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift

How to spot understatement

  1. Look for mild words describing a serious event or strong feeling.
  2. Compare the description with what is actually happening.
  3. Ask whether the gap creates humour, restraint, or criticism.

What is the difference between understatement and hyperbole?

Understatement makes something seem smaller than it is, while hyperbole makes it seem larger. Calling a disaster a slight inconvenience is understatement. Saying that a short wait lasted a thousand years is hyperbole. Both depend on a noticeable gap between the language and the facts.

Is litotes the same as understatement?

Litotes is a particular form of understatement that expresses an idea by denying its opposite. Describing an excellent performance as not bad can be litotes. Understatement is broader: it can also downplay something directly, without using a negative expression.
