In Chapter 52, Sir Gawaine and Gaheris survive an attack through four ladies’ intervention, and Gawaine gains release after his royal identity becomes known. 3. One lady learns Gawaine’s identity and persuades the knights to release him because he is King Arthur’s nephew.
  4. Gawaine receives the hart’s head and must ride to Camelot carrying the dead woman’s head and body.
  5. Merlin requests a full account, and the displeased king and queen submit Gawaine to judgment by ladies.
  6. The council imposes lifelong duties of mercy, courtesy, and service to women, and Gawaine swears an oath.
