Chapter 30 of 41 · 16 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 30, Lady Audley tells Sir Michael Audley that Robert Audley is mentally disturbed and links his suspicions about George Talboys to an obsession. Her genuine distress strengthens her case, and Sir Michael promises to keep Robert away from her and arrange a medical assessment rather than accept his accusations.

  2. Her genuine sobbing alarms her husband, and she blames Robert for causing her distress.
  3. She argues that Robert’s fixation on George Talboys’s disappearance makes him insane.
  4. She reports his claim that George is murdered at Audley Court and prevents Sir Michael from visiting him that night.
  5. Sir Michael promises to keep Robert away from Lucy and seek a doctor’s judgment.
  6. Lucy secures her husband’s protection, cancels her dinner engagement, and privately imagines making Robert fear her.
