A farm wife advises the nation

Samantha Allen decides that the whole country needs her advice. She plans to travel to the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876 as a Promiscuous Advisor and Private Investigator, with her husband Josiah beside her. His thoughts rest mostly on his next meal.

Marietta Holley gives Samantha a grand, earnest voice, entirely sure of its own worth. That confidence makes room for both comedy and conviction: beneath the big words and the jokes about pomp stand arguments for women's votes, temperance and kindness to the poor.

You will love this book if you enjoy a funny narrator with firm opinions, village comedy, and a sharp-tongued heroine who speaks up for women and plain kindness.

What this book is

What happens when a farm wife decides the whole country needs her advice? Samantha Allen, known as Josiah Allen's wife, announces that she will travel to the Philadelphia Centennial in 1876 as a Promiscuous Advisor and Private Investigator. Her husband Josiah, whose mind rests mostly on his next meal, goes along.

Key point 1 of 10

A Debating Society Votes Against Her

The trip begins in a cold schoolhouse, where the Jonesville Creation Searching Society meets on Tuesday nights. Samantha attends with her knitting, and Josiah holds her ball of yarn. The men fight over whether a woman may take part at all.

Solomon Cypher begs the room to beware of the female pole, which he thinks will bring men and women into a dreadful closeness. Samantha notes that he has lived with a wife for forty years.

She will not speak in public. She holds that a woman must make her family comfortable before she takes on the nation, yet she believes firmly in justice for women. When the society votes that women's minds are too weak, she thanks them politely and walks home. Later she agrees to go to the Centennial as a Promiscuous Advisor and a Private Investigator, and Josiah likes the sound of the letters P. I.

A mind that stays calm under insult can turn the insult into a mission.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Josiah Allen's Wife as a P. A. and P. I.

What is Josiah Allen's Wife as a P. A. and P. I. about?

It follows Samantha Allen, a farm wife from Jonesville, on a trip to the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial. She travels as an advisor and investigator, visits relatives, meets famous people at the fair and speaks up for women and temperance.

What do P. A. and P. I. stand for?

P. A. means Promiscuous Advisor, which Samantha uses to mean an advisor to everyone alike. P. I. means Private Investigator. The Jonesville society gives her the second title and she insists on the first, so she takes both.

Who is Josiah Allen's wife?

She is Samantha Allen, born Smith, who narrates the book. She is large, earnest and sure of herself, and she loves her small, thrifty husband Josiah dearly. Her neighbors know her best as Josiah Allen's wife.

Is it based on a true story, and when was it written?

It is a comic novel by Marietta Holley, not a true account. It was written around the time of the 1876 Centennial, which was a real fair in Philadelphia, and it uses real places and visitors in a made-up tale.

What is the main message of the book?

The book argues that women deserve a voice and a vote, that drink ruins homes, and that kindness matters more than show or gloom. It makes these points through jokes, speeches and scenes of everyday life.
