Homecoming brings grief instead of glory
For twelve years, Colin Elrigmore has imagined riding home from the German wars on a fine horse, admired by the girls of the town. Instead, he enters Inneraora at night, unseen. His cousin Gavin is dead abroad, and a strange moaning draws him toward the gallows.
At Elrigmore, his father has a light burning and supper ready. But his welcome hides terrible news: Colin's mother was buried that day. The soldier's dream of glory meets the private grief that war and absence cannot undo.

What this book is
Would you ride into your home town at night and find it silent, with two hanged men creaking at the gate? That is how Colin Elrigmore comes back to Inneraora in Argyll after twelve years of study and soldiering abroad. His father waits at the door with supper laid, and he has sad news about Colin's mother.
John Splendid is a Scottish novel by Neil Munro, set in 1644 and the winter after, when the Marquis of Argyll faces Montrose and the Irish soldiers of Alasdair MacDonald. Colin tells it as an old man, with humour, shame and tenderness. You get a war story, a love story and a friendship with John M'Iver, called Splendid, a charming boaster who always makes the other man feel clever.

A soldier comes home to a silent town
The book opens with a daydream that meets a cold fact. Colin Elrigmore has run away from Glasgow College to fight in the German wars. For twelve years he pictures his return on a good horse, with the girls of the town watching. When he finally rides in, nobody sees him at all.
It is night, and Inneraora sleeps behind shuttered windows. His cousin Gavin, who shared the same dream, lies dead in Germany. A strange moaning leads Colin to the town gallows, and he knows the land is troubled.
He rides on to his father's house at Elrigmore, where a light still burns. His father greets him in Gaelic as if he has expected him every night, lays out a soldier's supper, and turns away from every question about Colin's mother. At last he says she was laid in the earth that very day.
The dream of glory ends at a doorway where grief is waiting.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about John Splendid
What is John Splendid about?
It follows Colin Elrigmore, a Highland soldier home from Germany, and his friend John M'Iver through the invasion of Argyll in 1644 and 1645, with the Marquis of Argyll, Montrose and a courtship at its centre.
Who is John Splendid in the book?
John Splendid is the nickname of John M'Iver of Barbreck, a poor cousin of the Marquis of Argyll. He manages the silver mines, boasts cheerfully, and shields his friends' pride with flattery and kindness.
Is John Splendid a true story?
It is a novel, not history. Neil Munro dedicated it in 1898 as a picture of times and customs, and it uses real figures such as Montrose and the Marquis of Argyll in an invented tale.
What does Gillesbeg Gruamach mean?
It is the Gaelic nickname of the Marquis of Argyll. Gruamach means grim-faced, and Gillesbeg is a form of Archibald, so the name suggests a stern-looking chief who is actually thoughtful.
Is John Splendid easy to read?
The book has a warm, talkative narrator, lively dialogue and short chapters full of adventure, humour and landscape. Its fights, escapes and courtship scenes keep the story moving along at a pleasing pace.
