In Chapter 5, Flemming and Berkley travel from Salzburg to Saint Gilgen, where an evening visit to the churchyard turns Flemming’s thoughts toward death, departed friends, and reunion. His distress briefly gives way to calm, and he decides to stay beside the lake while Berkley continues alone to the baths at Ischel.

What happens

  1. On a bright Sunday, Flemming and Berkley leave Salzburg, change horses at Hof, and observe peasants gathering for worship.
  2. They reach Saint Gilgen beside Lake Saint Wolfgang and stop at an inn as a religious procession passes.
  3. Berkley breakfasts in a cold bath and then sleeps, while Flemming reads in his room.
  4. After the heat fades, they walk beside the lake and enter the village churchyard.
  5. Among the graves, Flemming reflects on death as a reunion with departed friends and feels his suffering ease.
  6. He decides to remain in Saint Gilgen and spends hours in quiet thought before looking out into the late night.
