Hunger, Part 2 summary

Part 2 of 4 · 55 min to read the part

In Part 2, the hungry narrator wanders through the night, loses his keys, and obtains police shelter by presenting himself as a journalist under a false name. Darkness brings terror and confused fantasies, while his invented identity stops him from requesting a breakfast ticket, leaving him hungry when he returns home.

What happens

  1. After leaving the churchyard, the starving narrator tricks a policeman with an empty paper cone and dreams of Princess Ylajali.
  2. Awakened in wet clothes, he wanders through the streets, encounters another policeman’s kindness, and discovers his keys are missing.
  3. He seeks police lodging, gives the false name Andreas Tangen, claims employment at Morgenbladet, and receives a separate cell.
  4. Once the gas goes out, darkness terrifies him; he invents Kuboa, struggles to define it, and fears losing his mind.
  5. Daylight calms him, but he leaves without requesting breakfast because he fears exposure of his lies.
  6. At home, Jens Olaj asks him for money before he can ask for help, prompting laughter despite his hunger.
