Key point 1 of 10

A successful operation sets a summer moving

The book opens in a hospital waiting room, where Hildegarde paces with her hands clasped and her eyes black with worry. Then her mother and the cheerful Dr. Flower come in. The operation on her friend Rose has gone wonderfully well.

Rose has not walked for fourteen years. The doctor says she may take her first steps in about ten days. He prescribes beef tea, fresh air and exercise, and he trusts Hildegarde to see it through. She cries, laughs and calls him a dear, good doctor.

Hildegarde already has a plan. Her mother's elderly relative, Cousin Wealthy, has invited both girls to spend the summer in Maine. Dr. Flower approves and sets the day of departure for June 15th.

Then he goes to tell Rose's brother Bubble, a pale schoolboy waiting in the hall. Nobody has told Bubble the news, yet he says he simply knew. His love for his sister is the quiet engine behind much that follows.

A kind plan made out of gratitude can carry a whole summer.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
