Grimms' Fairy Tales, Part 43 summary

Part 43 of 62 · 4 min to read the part

In The Three Languages, a count rejects his son for learning only animal languages, but those skills help the young man recover treasure and become pope. His understanding of dogs, frogs, and birds turns the knowledge his father despises into a means of ending suffering, recognizing a prediction, and performing religious duties.

What happens

  1. After three years with different teachers, the young man understands dogs, birds, and frogs, but his father orders servants to kill him.
  2. The servants spare him and take a deer's eyes and tongue back as false proof of his death.
  3. He spends a night among dangerous dogs and learns that a spell forces them to guard buried treasure.
  4. He retrieves a gold-filled chest, and the dogs disappear, ending the district's distress.
  5. Traveling to Rome, he hears frogs predict his appointment as pope, which two white doves signal to the churchmen.
  6. He accepts the office, and the doves supply the words he needs to sing mass.
