Grimms' Fairy Tales, Part 37 summary

Part 37 of 62 · 5 min to read the part

In The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids, a wolf changes his voice and paws to fool seven young goats, swallows six, and leaves the youngest hidden. Their mother cuts the six unharmed children from his belly and replaces them with stones, which pull him into a well and drown him.

What happens

  1. The old goat leaves to find food and warns her seven children about the wolf’s rough voice and black feet.
  2. The wolf softens his voice with chalk and has his paws covered with dough and flour after two failed attempts.
  3. The kids admit him on his third visit; he swallows six, while the youngest escapes discovery inside the clock case.
  4. The mother returns, hears the youngest’s account, and finds the sleeping wolf with movement inside his belly.
  5. She cuts out her six living children, and the seven kids fill his stomach with stones before she sews it shut.
  6. The thirsty wolf bends over a well, falls under the stones’ weight, and drowns; the family celebrates.
