Grimms' Fairy Tales, Clever Gretel summary

Clever Gretel of 62 · 4 min to read the chapter

In Clever Gretel, a cook drinks wine and eats both chickens meant for her master and his guest, then invents two stories to hide her actions. She frightens the guest with a threat to his ears and accuses him of stealing dinner, turning her master’s pursuit into a frightening misunderstanding.

What happens

  1. Gretel prepares two chickens for her master and his expected guest, but the guest does not arrive when the food is ready.
  2. While her master fetches the guest, Gretel drinks wine, tastes the chickens, and finds excuses to eat both.
  3. Her master returns, announces the guest’s approach, and sharpens a carving knife while Gretel promises to serve dinner.
  4. Gretel warns the arriving guest that her master plans to remove his ears, and the sound of sharpening makes him flee.
  5. Gretel accuses the guest of stealing both chickens, so her master chases him with the knife, asking for one.
  6. The guest thinks the master demands an ear rather than a chicken and runs faster.
