What this book is
What would make a charming, well-liked man in Georgetown keep one chapter of his life locked away for years? In Green Mansions, a quarrel between two friends forces the answer into the open. One evening on a veranda, a man known as Mr. Abel agrees at last to tell the story of his years in Venezuela.
W. H. Hudson, a naturalist with a close eye for birds, trees and weather, published this romance in 1904. It follows a young Venezuelan who flees a failed revolt and loses himself in the forests of Guayana. Among the trees he hears a voice that sounds like a bird and speaks like a person. You get adventure, a love story and a loving look at tropical nature.

A quarrel opens a locked chapter of life
The book opens in Georgetown, in British Guiana, in 1887. A young clerk befriends Mr. Abel, a wealthy Venezuelan whom everyone loves for his kindness and his talk of nature and poetry. Yet Abel goes cold whenever the talk turns to the Indigenous peoples of the interior.
A sharp quarrel brings the matter into the open. By morning Abel has written a letter begging forgiveness, and on the veranda, over black coffee, he decides to speak.
Abel begins at twenty-three, in a Venezuela that is a republic in name only. He joins a conspiracy as easily as a young man joins a club. It fails, and as the only son of a man the Minister of War hated, he has to run for his life. He goes up the Orinoco, keeps a journal in hope of fame, and falls to fever at the swampy post of Manapuri, where rain turns his pages to pulp. Abel's story begins with flight, illness and a lost book, and each loss pushes him deeper into the forest.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.
