From the Earth to the Moon, Part 2, Chapter 15 summary
Part 2, Chapter 15 of 51 · 11 min to read the chapter
In Chapter 15, Barbicane, Nicholl, and Michel Ardan discuss the open curves that seem to carry their helpless projectile away from both Earth and the Moon. They observe a lunar eruption and survive an approaching meteor’s explosion, whose light briefly reveals possible seas, clouds, and forests without settling whether the Moon supports life.
What happens
- Unable to steer or measure their course, the travelers debate whether the projectile follows a parabola or a hyperbola.
- Michel asks where these curves lead, and his companions acknowledge that neither offers a return to Earth or the Moon.
- Cold forces them to consume gas for warmth, while frozen moisture on the windows hampers observation.
- A reddish light reveals an apparent lunar eruption, but Barbicane warns that combustion does not necessarily prove an atmosphere.
- An enormous glowing meteor approaches their path and bursts before an apparent collision; flying fragments crack the left scuttle.
- The explosion briefly illuminates the hidden lunar surface, revealing apparent clouds, seas, and forestlike masses before darkness returns.
